Tax Residency Rules in Japan (in simple language)

You're a Japanese tax resident if Japan is your main base of life (your "domicile" — where your family, relationships, and assets are centered), or if you've lived in Japan continuously for a year or more. You're assumed to be domiciled in Japan if your job requires living there for a year or more, or if your close family and assets are based there. If your job requires you to live abroad long-term and your family is also abroad, you're presumed not to be a Japanese resident.View Tax Law Source
