Tax Residency Rules in India (in simple language)

You're an Indian tax resident if you were in India for 182 or more days during the tax year (April 1 to March 31), or if you were in India for 60 or more days in the current year and 365 or more days across the preceding 4 years. Indian citizens and persons of Indian origin living abroad who visit India have a modified 60-day threshold raised to 182 days. There is also a "not ordinarily resident" status for long-term non-residents returning to India, which limits taxation of certain foreign income for up to 2 years.View Tax Law Source
