Frequently Asked Questions

Learn how the Tax Residency Calculator works and where we get our data.

The Tax Residency Calculator helps you track your days spent in different countries to determine your potential tax residency status. Here's how it works:

    1. Select a country - Choose the country you want to track from our list of 63+ supported countries.
    2. Mark your travel dates - Click on the calendar to mark your entry and exit dates for each trip.
    3. View your summary - The calculator automatically counts your days and shows your progress toward the residency threshold.
    4. Check the 183-day rule - Most countries use a 183-day threshold, but some have different rules (see below).

Your data is stored locally in your browser and is never sent to any server. This means your travel information remains completely private.

The 183-day rule is a common international standard used by many countries to determine tax residency. If you spend 183 days or more in a country within a specific period (usually a calendar year or any 12-month period), you may become a tax resident of that country.

    Important variations:

    • USA - Uses the Substantial Presence Test (weighted calculation over 3 years)
    • Thailand - Uses 180 days instead of 183
    • UAE - 183 days OR 90 days with additional conditions
    • Israel - 183 days in a year, OR 425 days over 3 years with at least 30 days in the current year

Always consult with a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your situation.

Our tax residency rules are sourced from official government publications and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). We use:

    • OECD Tax Residency Documents - Official country-by-country tax residency definitions
    • Government Tax Authority Websites - Direct sources like IRS (USA), FTA (UAE), etc.
    • Official Legislation - Tax codes and cabinet decisions from each country

You can find link to the official tax residency rules for each country in the calculator interface, and we regularly review and update our data to reflect any changes in regulations.
